Feliz Frida 2019

After a couple years hiatus, I finally have creative energy to focus on another tribute to Frida Kahlo. This is a personal tradition I started several years ago when I was running an online sewing group. Each July, I challenged members to make something that sparked their inner Frida.

I saved this tall crown for a perfect turquoise sisal straw. The long gold glass beads and silk tassel adds bling and a little Asian flair. Frida liked Chinese clothing and accessories. I saw her personal wardrobe exhibition last year at the V & A in London, and was surprised to see hair pins and clothing from China. Frida also liked visiting San Francisco, and I suspect some of her pieces came from local shops on Grant Street.

This might be my personal favorite Summer piece, but I think the crown can be worn through the Fall season. Pair it with an elegant burnt orange sun dress or a slinky black silk number cut on the bias; modern or vintage style.

Happy birthday Frida! I wish you were here to wear this.
